This wasn’t your usual Hollywood Week.

“American Idol” threw some curveballs at contestants and viewers on the March 16 episode of the ABC singing competition. This time there was a “Genre Challenge,” where the singers got to divide themselves into the genre of their choice and then perform the song of their choice.

Louis Knight was the only Pennsylvania singer to get air time on the episode. A pizza boy from Narberth near Philadelphia (but originally from London), Knight had amazed the judges with his original song during his audition. At the time, Luke Bryan had told Knight that he thought he “might be the biggest star we’ve ever had on ‘American Idol.’”

But that was auditions, and competition was tougher than ever in Hollywood Week.

“It’s a lot of pressure,” Knight told cameras. “But the people here are just extraordinarily — I’ve never seen talent like it.”

His solo performance during Hollywood Week didn’t generate quite the same reaction as his audition. All three judges agreed that he hadn’t brought “the sauce” in his ballad take on “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” But still they moved him on to the next round.

That next round is duets, followed by solo performances with a backing band. The duets will air on the show’s 8 p.m. March 22 episode, while solo’s will air on the 8 p.m. March 23 episode. It’s a new format for Hollywood Week, which often features a group round.

Philadelphia Eagles cheerleader Kyle Tanguay was also competing in Hollywood Week, but we didn’t spot him in the March 16 episode. That doesn’t mean he didn’t make it onto the duets round. We’ll let you know how he did once we know.
